Why does ChatGPT forget things? Memory and context explained
Understand why ChatGPT loses track of details, check saved memory and give new chats useful context. Learn what AI Passport can carry between assistants.
ChatGPT can remember a preference and still lose track of something you said earlier. It can also remember a detail in one conversation and fail to use it in the next.
Usually, the explanation is where the information lives. Something you wrote in a chat is not necessarily saved as memory. Even when information is available, the assistant can overlook or misunderstand it.
You can make this less frustrating by choosing what should carry into future conversations and giving each task the material it needs.
A conversation and a memory do different jobs
The conversation gives ChatGPT material for the task happening now. If you paste a holiday itinerary, it can use that itinerary to suggest a day out.
Saved memory is intended to carry useful personal context between conversations. Your preference for public transport might belong there. The departure time of a train you are catching tomorrow probably does not.
Custom instructions are another source. You can use them to give continuing directions about how you want answers written. They do not replace the details needed for a particular task.
OpenAI’s memory documentation explains where to manage memory. On ChatGPT’s website, start in Settings → Personalization. The controls available depend on your account.
1. Check whether it was actually saved
If ChatGPT has forgotten something important, ask what it remembers about that subject, then check the memory controls yourself.
A reply saying “I’ll remember” is not enough evidence that the information is stored where you intended. Check the saved wording. It may contain a broad summary that leaves out the detail you needed.
For example, “I am learning Spanish” does not tell the assistant that you are preparing for a particular exam in June. Decide whether the exam is useful continuing context or something to supply when you ask for a revision plan.
If the information is sensitive, consider whether it needs to become a continuing memory at all. You can give relevant details within the task instead.
2. Give a new conversation a useful starting point
Do not assume a new chat has everything from the last one. Give it a short handover when you are continuing a project.
I’m continuing my kitchen renovation plan. The current budget is £8,000. We decided to keep the existing layout. Use the attached measurements and help me compare these two quotes.
This is more dependable than “Carry on where we left off.” It tells the assistant which decisions still apply and provides the documents that determine the answer.
You do not need to paste the entire old conversation. Ask the previous chat to draft a handover, then read it before reusing it. Remove abandoned ideas so they do not return as settled decisions.
OpenAI’s prompting guide recommends supplying the relevant context for the current task.
3. Reset a conversation that has become muddled
A long conversation can contain contradictory instructions. You might have changed your budget twice or asked the assistant to compare an option you later rejected.
As a conversation grows, not every earlier detail will necessarily be supplied or used in the way you expect. A bigger context capacity also does not guarantee that the assistant will find the right passage.
If it keeps returning to an old decision, write a clear replacement.
Our current budget is £8,000. The earlier £12,000 figure is no longer valid. Rework the comparison using £8,000.
If the answer is still tangled, start a new conversation with the current brief and the relevant files. Keep the historical conversation for reference rather than asking it to serve as the latest project plan.
Research on long-context models has found that the position of information can affect performance, although the size of the effect depends on the model and task. Lost in the Middle is evidence of that problem, rather than a measurement of every current ChatGPT version.
4. Check the source when it remembers the wrong thing
An old document can reintroduce a detail you have already corrected in memory. An assistant using last year’s CV may give your previous job title quite accurately according to that file.
Ask where the detail came from and open the source if one is identified. Replace an outdated working document or label it as historical. Correcting memory cannot update the contents of a file.
Keep useful context across assistants with AI Passport
AI Passport holds selected personal context that connected assistants can use with your permission. It gives you a place to maintain context you want to carry between tools.
Suppose you plan a renovation in ChatGPT but use Claude to compare suppliers. You could propose a Passport memory recording the agreed budget and the decision to keep the existing layout. Check the proposed wording before approving it. Include a date so a later assistant can tell how current the decision is.
A permitted assistant can retrieve that context when you ask it to continue the work. Approving the memory and allowing an app to read the relevant category are separate decisions.
This does not automatically merge your chats. You still need to supply task-specific documents, such as the latest quote. Passport carries selected context rather than making every conversation available everywhere.

When something must be exact, put it in the current request or attach its source. Memory can reduce repetition, but the final answer still needs to be checked against the information that matters.
