ChatGPT Temporary Chat and your privacy
Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat deliberately. Understand the difference between chat history and saved context, and check connected services before sharing private details.
Temporary Chat can be useful when you want to keep a one-off question separate from your usual conversations. It still involves sending information to an online service.
The word “temporary” does not, by itself, answer every privacy question. Whether a conversation appears in your account is different from whether the provider retains a copy. Training and saved memory are separate questions again.
Use the mode’s current explanation to understand its specific promises. For sensitive information, start by deciding what you are comfortable sending at all.
Start a temporary chat deliberately
Open a new chat and select the Temporary Chat control available in your version of ChatGPT. Check that the interface shows the mode is active before entering the prompt.
OpenAI’s command reference also lists a keyboard shortcut for a new temporary chat. A shortcut is convenient, but it is still worth looking at the resulting screen. An ordinary conversation left open yesterday is not a temporary chat just because you intend to delete it later.
Read the explanation displayed with the mode. Pay particular attention to what it says about history and personalisation. Do not assume that a label in the interface describes every copy the service may hold.
For a first attempt, use a harmless question you would not mind leaving in a normal chat. Learn where the control is before using it for something personal.
What OpenAI says Temporary Chat does
OpenAI’s Temporary Chat help article currently describes these rules for personal ChatGPT accounts:
- A temporary chat does not appear in your chat history unless you choose to save it. Saving turns it into a regular chat that follows your usual settings.
- You decide when you start the chat whether it is personalised. A personalised temporary chat can use your existing memories and custom instructions. Either way, ChatGPT does not create or update memories from it while it stays temporary.
- It is not used to improve OpenAI’s models while it stays temporary.
- OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. OpenAI’s privacy policy says temporary chats are deleted within 30 days unless OpenAI has to keep them for safety or legal reasons.
If you use ChatGPT through work or school, your organisation’s settings can take priority. These rules can change, so check the article if you are relying on one of them.
Separate the history from the memory
Your conversation history is the record you can open again. Saved memory is information an assistant can use in later conversations. Clearing one is not evidence that you cleared the other.
Custom instructions are another possible source of context. You may have told ChatGPT to write briefly or use a particular tone. If a supposedly fresh conversation still sounds familiar, check which personalisation settings apply to it.
OpenAI’s personalisation guide explains the separate role of instructions and memory.
A useful habit is to ask yourself what you want to happen after the question is answered. If you are researching a birthday present, you probably do not want that research treated as a lasting preference about you. If you are establishing a writing preference, you may want to keep it deliberately.
The decision should follow the information, rather than the convenience of whichever chat is already open.
Keep the prompt smaller anyway
A temporary mode is not a reason to paste a complete bank statement for help with one charge.
Write the question with the relevant amount and a description of the problem. Leave account details out. For help composing a personal message, explain the situation without copying someone else’s private correspondence wholesale.
You can use placeholders.
Help me write a tactful message declining an invitation. I cannot afford the trip this month. Do not include a detailed explanation of my finances.
That gives the assistant a usable task without a financial history.
At work, use the account and workflow your organisation permits. A temporary mode does not grant permission to upload confidential material.
Watch what happens outside the conversation
A tool connected to an assistant can involve another service. Reading from a connected account and carrying out an action there are different from simply writing an answer.
If an assistant creates an event in your calendar, closing the chat does not remove the event. If information is delivered to an external service, that service has its own handling of the information.
Check the requested action before approving it. For a task that only needs advice, you may not need an external tool at all.
The same distinction applies when you later disconnect a service. Google’s account-access guidance explains that after you remove access, you may need to ask the app’s developer to delete the information it already has.
Keep chosen context in AI Passport
You may want a one-off conversation to stay separate while keeping a few useful preferences available across your AI tools.
AI Passport holds selected personal context that connected assistants can use with your permission. It gives you a place to keep those deliberate choices without turning every conversation into permanent context.
For example, you could retain “Explain unfamiliar financial terms in plain English” without retaining the personal dispute you wanted help with.
Ask a connected assistant explicitly to propose the preference for AI Passport, then read the proposal before approving it. You also decide which connected apps may read the relevant context.
Saving something in Passport is a separate action. It does not alter ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat rules or remove information already sent to ChatGPT.
Read how Passport permissions work.
If you shared something you should not have
Treat the information itself as the starting point. An exposed password needs changing even if you used a temporary chat. Work information may need reporting through your organisation’s usual process.
For an ordinary personal detail, review the applicable chat and memory controls. If you saved a temporary chat, it is now a regular chat and can be deleted like one. Avoid adding more sensitive information while asking the assistant to explain the mistake.
Temporary modes are useful tools for particular situations. The most dependable privacy habit remains choosing what to send before pressing the button.
