How to delete ChatGPT and Claude conversations
Plan a proper AI-chat cleanup: distinguish deleting from archiving, check memory and files, follow Claude's documented steps, and handle remaining copies.
Deleting an AI conversation removes a record you no longer want in your account. It does not necessarily remove a separately saved memory or a document stored somewhere else.
Start by deleting the conversation through its own menu. Then check the other places the information may have been kept. Closing a browser tab does not do this, and archiving a conversation is a different action.
1. Save anything you still need
Before deleting a conversation, decide whether there is anything worth keeping from it.
You may want a draft you have finished editing. Copy that draft to the place you normally keep your work, without preserving the entire exchange unnecessarily.
An export creates another copy. If the conversation contains sensitive information, remember that a downloaded archive needs appropriate protection too.
Do not delete work records your organisation requires you to keep. Use its retention process rather than deciding that every old conversation is disposable.
2. Delete the ChatGPT conversation
On ChatGPT’s website, hover over the conversation in the sidebar, open its … menu, choose Delete, then confirm. In the mobile app, press and hold the conversation in your chat list, or use the menu inside the open chat, then choose Delete. OpenAI’s deletion guide documents these controls. Read the confirmation before accepting it.
Make sure you are acting on the intended chat, particularly if several have similar automatically generated titles. Check that you are in the correct personal account or workspace.
To remove every chat at once, open Settings → Data controls and choose Delete all chats. OpenAI says this cannot be undone and can include chats inside projects.
If you previously archived it, find it under Settings → Data controls → Archived chats, where you can unarchive or delete it. Archiving removes a chat from the sidebar but keeps it in your account, and OpenAI says it does not change how long the chat is retained. Archive is useful for tidying a workspace because the conversation can still be available later.
For a privacy cleanup, look for a delete action rather than using archive as a substitute.
Afterwards, refresh your history and check that the intended conversation has disappeared. That confirms the visible result. It is not a way to measure everything held in the provider’s systems.
3. Delete the Claude conversation
On Claude’s website, find the conversation in the sidebar or Chats and tasks. Open its menu, choose Delete, then confirm. To delete several, open Chats and tasks, choose Select from any conversation’s menu, tick the ones you want (or Select all), then choose Delete.
The location differs on mobile. On iOS, touch and hold the conversation in your chat list. On Android, open the conversation and use the ⋮ menu. Check the title before confirming.
Claude’s deletion guide documents these controls. It also distinguishes deleting a conversation from deleting project information or the account itself.
If you uploaded a document as a reusable project resource, check that resource separately. Claude keeps projects until you delete them. In ChatGPT, OpenAI says deleting a chat does not remove files saved separately in your Library, and files added to a project stay until the project is deleted. Deleting a conversation should not be your only step when the same document is still available elsewhere.
4. Check saved memory and instructions
A conversation may have led to a saved preference or fact about you.
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Personalization → Memory and review the controls available to your account. Remove or correct the relevant entry. OpenAI’s memory guide says deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a saved memory created from it, and deleting a memory does not remove mentions of it from past chats.
Read custom instructions too if you copied the information there yourself. A preference written into your instructions can keep affecting answers after the original discussion is gone.
For Claude, open Settings → Your Claude and select Manage next to Your memory (older layouts show Settings → Memory). Anthropic’s memory guide says memory entries generated from a deleted conversation are not removed, so open the relevant topic and delete it there. Project memory is deleted when the project is deleted.
Ask a fresh conversation where an unwanted detail came from if it continues appearing. Its answer may help locate the source, but check the actual setting or file before concluding that the problem is fixed.
5. Understand what happens after deletion
A conversation disappearing from the interface and backend deletion are different events.
For Claude consumer accounts, Anthropic’s retention policy says a deleted conversation leaves your history immediately and is deleted from its back-end storage within 30 days. The exceptions are specific. Conversations flagged by its safety systems can be kept for up to 2 years (and safety classification scores for up to 7), data attached to thumbs up or down feedback is kept for 5 years, and chats can be kept as required by law. If you allowed your chats to be used for model improvement, deleting a chat keeps it out of future training, but data already used in training is not removed.
Do not read that period as a promise covering every type of information Anthropic holds.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says a deleted chat leaves your account immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or OpenAI must keep it longer for security or legal reasons. A deleted chat cannot be restored.
If you need a formal response about personal information the service holds, use its privacy request process. In the UK, the right to erasure is conditional, with circumstances where information can be retained.
6. Review AI Passport separately
AI Passport holds selected personal context that connected assistants can use with your permission. That context has its own lifecycle, separate from a conversation in ChatGPT or Claude.
Suppose you discussed a possible career change and approved a Passport memory about the project. Deleting the exploratory chat does not mean you now want to remove the useful project context. You can keep it deliberately, or remove it in Passport if it no longer belongs there.
Review the saved wording and check which apps have permission to read the relevant category. Revoke an old assistant’s pass if it no longer needs access.
Revoking Passport access stops future reads under that pass. It cannot remove text that an assistant has already received.
If the same private detail was copied into another chat, deleting the original does not reach that copy. Follow the information you actually shared, rather than expecting one delete button to find it everywhere.
